The author states that in 1935, the U.S. Army Air Corps bombs an insulating vent on the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii in an attempt to protect nearby communities from lava flows. The lava flows are redirected because of the resulting debris. It is not clear how effective this approach is, however, because Mauna Loa soon stops erupting.
