Young Hugo is the personification of compassion and proof to both Clover and the reader that there is someone out there for everyone. Since Hugo is only a part of the final act of the novel, the author quickly establishes how he is the exact opposite of Sebastian. He is kind, thoughtful, and considerate. He never puts Clover down and pays full attention to her whenever they are talking. Again, this does not mean that Hugo is the perfect man overall. Instead, he is proof that one can find the perfect person for them, regardless of their circumstances or inexperience.
