Sebastian is a representation of a self-centered worldview. While Sebastian does not seem to be willfully hurtful, he remains blissfully unaware of the way his words or actions harm Clover. His constant tardiness shows a lack of care for the time of others. His inability to focus or lack of attention to Clover during conversations portrays disinterest. In many ways, the contrast between Sebastian’s personality and Clover’s morals is meant to show the reader how important it is not to settle for someone just because they seem somewhat interested. Sebastian is not evil, nor is he fundamentally a terrible person, but he is not the right man for Clover.
