Clover is the personification of misguided solitude and crippling anxiety. Throughout the novel, Clover constantly convinces herself that she can never have a true relationship and will never understand people. At the same time, her skills of observation and compassion as a death doula allows her to understand people better than most, proving that it is her anxiety and fear dragging her down, not her actual personality. Only by acknowledging this, however, is Clover able to break free of the solitude she has built around herself.
