Set in New York, the overall language of the novel is easy to follow with only a few unusual words that the reader is introduced. The concept of a death doula is established extremely early so the reader understands Clover’s work and compassion. The death cafes are also used to show how uncomfortable the conversation around death is for most and how Clover’s perspective on it is different from others. There are some mentions of books, movies, and other countries, but most are used to show how much Clover misses her travels and how she buries herself in the stories of others to ignore her own loneliness. The reader does not know to know any specifics about these; they just have to understand what effect they have on Clover’s perception.
