What is the theme in The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel?

One main theme of the novel revolves around the negative aspects of the patriarchal society. Over the course of the novel, the author exposes what she believes to be the dangerous traits of the patriarchy in regard to the Clan, and the major contribution this social structure made to its extinction.
