This entire story is told through the eyes of John Berendt as he arrives in and then lives in Venice. John tells the story behind the Fenice: it's past, present, and the hopeful future. The story is told in the first person point of view based on Berendt's experiences. His interviews are told as if the reader were sitting right in the room. Since the story is a true-life crime story, Berendt's decision to tell the story in the first person point of view is successful and helps the reader to understand what Berendt is feeling as he is interviewing the characters. In addition, it helps the reader gather an insight into the characters themselves: their actions, movements, and tone of voice. By gathering an insight into the characters, the reader is allowed to feel like he or she is actually interviewing the character.
