The tone of The City Reader varies, as its essays are written by a variety of authors on numerous topics. For the most part, the tone is academic, as the writers present their points and arguments in the context of the other works that are presented here. Together, they construct a body of criticism that is relatively coherent. The editors, for example, compare Wright's plans for Broadacre cities to Le Corbusier's plans for a Contemporary City. As a result, the academic tone and connections assist readers in understanding the major debates around which this field of study currently centers.
