The story is written in straightforward language though the fact that the story is not written in chronological order is somewhat confusing. The language is typical of modern British English and there are a few words that may be unfamiliar to readers not acquainted with British English. For example, Stephen has a near-death experience when the truck in front of him has an accident. This truck is described as a "lorry." These words are presented only occasionally and the meanings of most are evident from the context.
