Jude's name is symbolic of the betrayal of a close bond or trust. As a mother, her closest bond should be to her daughter. Emma should have been able to trust her with anything. However, like Judas Iscariot the disciple in the Bible who betrayed Jesus to the authorities, Jude breaks that bond repeatedly. She chooses Will over Emma and kicks Emma out of the house when she is still a child. Jude is completely unaware of the danger Will posed to her daughter and blind to the real cause of Emma's anxiety. Perhaps, the greatest betrayal is the life-long lie of pretending to be her real mother as well as robbing Emma and her birth mother of their true bond.
