Over the course of the novel, Emma's eventual confession to Kate Waters, the reporter, reveals a childhood filled with crimes perpetrated against her. At fourteen, her molestation, rape, pregnancy, and the subsequent secret burial of her dead baby devastate her young psyche. The final blow to her emotional security comes when her mother kicks her out of the house, in effect choosing a life with Will rather than raising and supporting her daughter.
