A child represents innocence, both physically and emotionally, and helplessness that assumes the protection of others. Baby Alice should have been safe in the maternity ward of the hospital, but she was left alone for a few critical minutes and had her true life ripped away. She had no ability to control any aspect of her life, yet the adults surrounding her were unable to protect her from danger.
