The novel is told from the viewpoint of four different women who lives are intertwined through the discovery of a baby's body in a construction site. The alternating viewpoints allow the author to explore the emotions and thoughts of all the women as they react to the news of the baby's discovery and as investigations by both the police and Kate are ongoing. Written in short chapters, sometimes just a page or two in length, the author takes turns highlighting what is taking place with each of the women. At times when the action is heating up the author will have two or three consecutive chapters focused on the same character so that the intensity of the plot is not interrupted by a shift to another character. Readers are able to follow the action in the way in which it would occur naturally and move along with the character to see what happens next.
