An unnamed narrator is looking for a Reverend Smiley. No one knows a Rev. Smiley, but they do know a Jim Smiley...a man that loved to gamble. In particular, Smiley likes to make bets on longshot animals. Smiley has a dog that has been trained to lose fights until there is money on the table....then he wins. Smiley trains a frog to jump high, fast and straight. Then he starts taking wagers. A stranger shows up and takes the bet. While Smiley goes out to get the stranger his own frog, the stranger fills Smiley's frog (named Daniel Webster) full of quail shot. Of course, when they go to race them, Daniel can't even jump because he's weighed down. Smiley goes after the stranger, but never finds him.
