Who is Elijah Baley from The Caves of Steel and what is their importance?

Elijah Bailey is a New York City police officer. At the age of eight, he and his sisters were orphaned when their father suffered a deadly accident at work. Elijah knew what he wanted and worked his way up through the police department. He is our main character and protagonist in the novel.
