Braun tells the story using a fairly equal distribution of exposition and dialogue. This allows the narrator to share the events as well as the conversations between characters which serve to further character development. The novel follows Qwill through his adventures in Pickax in the form of his investigation into the disappearance of Daisy Mull. The events are generally seen through Qwill's point of view, though he is not the narrator.
