Fortunato is the victim of Montressor's revenge. He is walled up inside the catacombs that are underneath Montressor's family estate. From what we are told of Fortunato he is a pompous individual, prone to drinking and much excess in life. We also learn that he may have had an affair with Mrs. Montressor.
