What are the motifs in The Captive Mind by Czeslaw Milosz?

A recurring idea of the book is life under an oppressive regime. Even though the main thrust of the book concerns life in the socialism of the people's democracies, the author and others also lived under the oppression and occupation of Nazi Germany. By definition of the term oppressive regime, the individual loses his basic freedoms. This was the result under both Nazism and socialism, and it is obvious throughout the book, but especially emphasized in the last two chapters.
