In The Canterbury Tales, why is the Pardoner so offensive?

The Pardoner is considered so offensive because he is so blatantly sinnful. He is greedy, prideful, and has no problem flaunting his sexual exploits. As they are all pilgrims making a holy journey to Canterbury he seems very out of place. Additionally, his very profession was viewed with suspicion (absolves people of their sins for tokens and favors).
