Who is Katia from The Cage and what is their importance?

Katia is the doctor who operated the first aid station and who took Riva on to help roll bandages. She gave Riva a warm bath, the first she'd had in months. She was a Russian but said the Russians would consider her a traitor and that she would not be welcomed by the Russians.
