What do clothes represent?

Bethany’s clothes represent inconsistency. Pauline describes Bethany’s hounds-tooth jacket and yellow pants as being an outfit no one would be caught dead wearing. She later said the clothes were not Bethany’s style. At the end of the novel, the reader learns Bethany was wearing such a strange combination of clothing because she was changing her identity so she could fake her death.
