Why is it ironic that Jamila looks to Karim for advice in Part One, Chapter Four?

Karim considers Jamila to be more stronger and wiser than him; he thinks of her as his conscience and feels inferior to her. Therefore, when Jamila looks to Karim to comfort her and act as a strong male figure in Part One, Chapter Four, it is ironic.
