In what ways was England a shock for Haroon and Anwar when they went there for school?

Although England's weather shocked Haroon and Anwar, they were also quite shocked by the class disparity they faced. They both came led affluent pampered lives in India, but in England they were expected to do things for themselves and work hard to achieve success, in essence building from scratch.
