Although Eleanor is being manipulated by Pyke and doesn't realize it, she is also doing some manipulating of her own. Eleanor strongly craves male attention, so she continues to string along Hater, a road sweeper who has been obsessed with her for a long time, although she has no intentions of ever having an intimate relationship with him. Eleanor also appears to be manipulating Karim, knowing that he is in love with her, yet treating him like a nuisance when the opportunity to get attention from Pyke presents itself.
