Jamila takes Anwar's death hard, as she feels awful about them not reconciling before he died. She also feels free of Anwar's control and is tempted to leave Changez, but her personal morals will not allow her to do so. Instead, Jamila decides to move to a commune and, only after Karim's prompting, allows Changez to follow her.
