The monetary amount of three thousand rubles is repeated throughout the novel. The amount is symbolic because of this repetition, as well as for the things the amount is attached to. Mitya owes Katarina three thousand rubles; Fyodor tempts Grushenka with three thousand rubles; Mitka spends this amount on Grushenka each time he visits.

Another symbol is Grushenka's shawl.... a symbol of class and quality. Unfortunately, adornments do not make the woman.
