Coming of Age is a major theme in the book. Ginny begins her journey with less mature thought processes, a black and white type of thinking, a proud yet arrogant sense of herself and her talents, and the uneasy feeling that she does not know where she fits into the world. When her life with her father suddenly becomes something other than what she thought it was for the past sixteen years, she races to find out the truth. As she flashes back to telling moments in her childhood, she strives to fit the pieces of the puzzle of her life together. She learns how to take the small pieces and put them together to form a coherent whole of who she is as a young adult.
