As Bruno walks along the fence, he explores the world around him. As he walks, he pays special attention to the fence that divides his home from the compound next door. Bruno begins to wonder about the people on the other side, as he has been told by his father that the people he sees through his bedroom window are not people. This is, of course, confusing because he can see that they ARE people. Bruno also contemplates what the people have done to be on that side of the fence, as well as who determines who will be on what side of the fence. This is a question that Bruno cannot fully appreciate, but that we, as readers, can.
