I think that Bruno and Greta match the era of the novel. Children, especially Nazi children, were told what to believe so questioning things was not a part of their education or cultural experience. They were simply taught to mind their manners and not ask questions of adults: especially adults in authority. Bruno, however, has a strong conscience and value system. Unlike his sister Greta, he seeks to know more.
