what is matt thinking about in chapters one to five?

As the novel opens, Matt Miller is beginning his senior year of high school several weeks after school has opened. He spent the first weeks of school tending to his mother as she struggled with breast cancer. He then organized her funeral. Matt spends much of his time thinking about his mother and how his life has changed.
