The character in the poem is neither boy nor girl, yet is both. Symbolically, the fifth line of the second stanza serves as a powerful remark about gender confusion. "He" creates something. "He" takes it away. It is the ultimate in transformation or destruction.... bringing something into being and then erasing it.
