Race is a recurring idea in the text. Race and ethnicity fill The Bourne Supremacy, as one would expect in a novel set at the end of colonial rule in Asia. Great Britain still administers its Crown Colony in Hong Kong and Portugal less directly administers Macau. The opening scene sets the stage: crowds of Chinese part to allow a tall Chinese priest and his bodyguard pass as they head from the docks to the "Golden Mile," the district of "discos and topless cafys" that caters to tasteless tourists. It is a ruse; the priest is a contract killer.
