In Chapter 6, what saves Will from Brogan when he falls into the circus car?

In Chapter Six, Mackie is taking Will up further so the guards can begin to pass him along to his father. Instead of taking him to the guards, Mackie brings him to Brogan. Brogan demands the key to Van Borne’s train car, but Will refuses, knowing that Brogan will just kill him anyway. Will manages to escape, hiding underneath the train and then making his way to the top. He manages to get towards the train cars that belong to the circus. He reaches the cars with animals and ends up getting saved by an elephant, who is interested in the almonds he had in his pocket.
