Why does Hans suddenly begin working again during the summer of 1942?

In 1942, the threat of air raids become real, and everyone in the neighborhood wants Hans to come over and paint their windows black. Hans has so much work, he runs out of black paint and has to start mixing other random colors together to try and achieve the dark color.
