What relationship does Liesel have with the book "The Whistler"?

During the first summer that Max is staying with the Hubermann family, Liesel reads the same book, "The Whistler" over and over. Frau Hermann offers to give the book the Liesel, but she refuses. A few days later, Liesel breaks into the Hermann house and steals the book for herself.
