What happens when Viktor Chemmel steals the book Liesel is reading?

Viktor steals Liesel's copy of the "The Whistler" and throws it into the river just to be cruel. Rudy wades out into the river and fetches it back. When he returns, he asks Liesel for a kiss. She thinks about it, but turns him down. He never asks Liesel to show him affection again.
