What happens when Rudy sees an airplane go down outside the bomb shelter?

Upon exiting the bomb shelter during an air raid drill, everyone sees a small fire in the distance. An American airplane pilot has gone down and is gravely injured. Rudy tries to shield Liesel from the dying man, but she is determined to see him. Rudy gives the man a teddy bear, hoping it will comfort him has he reaches death.
