What does the LSE do during the war?

The LSE is a small troop of men who are sent into cities after bombs have fallen to put out fires. This is the troop Hans fights with, and it is extremely dangerous. He is somewhat jealous of the fact that Herr Steiner gets to sit in a small office and tailor the damaged suits of fallen soldiers, a much safer task.
