How was Max Vandenberg treated by his schoolmates as a child?

As a child, Max was frequently bullied because he was Jewish. He got into fights constantly with the same boy, Walter Kugler. Even though Walter usually won his fights against Max, he began to feel endeared to Max because he was such a tenacious fighter. The two soon became friends.
