How is Hans paid for the work he does during the summer of 1942?

Most people in the neighborhood don't have a lot of money, so they often pay Hans in wares rather than cash. One day, he is paid with bottles of champagne, which he allows Liesel to drink with him. Liesel thinks the champagne is so sweet, she swears she will never drink it again lest she be disappointed.
