How does Liesel save Max from being discovered when the men are trolling the neighborhood inspecting basements?

The men are patrolling the neighborhood inspecting basements to decide which ones are fit to be used as bomb shelters. Liesel knows that the men will soon arrive at her house and that they will discover Max there. She fakes an injury during her soccer game and races home to warn Max.
