How does Hans narrowly avoid death during the second World War?

Hans beats one of his fellow soldiers in a friendly game of poker, but the beaten man is very disgruntled and steals Hans' seat on the truck ride home. The truck blows a tire and crashes, and the disgruntled poker player dies. Hans believes he owes this man his life.
