Roaring Abel is Cissy's father. He is the town drunk. He is also the carpenter in town. When he works on Mrs. Frederick's front porch, Valancy gets to know Roaring Abel better. Roaring Abel agrees to hire Valancy to take care of Cissy and cook for him.
When Valancy first arrives to move in with them, Roaring Abel is the first person in her life to pay Valancy a compliment. Roaring Abel also defends Valancy when her family comes and tries to belittle Valancy enough to make her return home.
