What is the symbolism of the empty room in the story, The Blizzard Party?

The empty room in the Saltwaters' Apelles apartment symbolizes avoidance. Throughout Hazel's childhood, she wonders if the room is in some way significant. As an adult, she sometimes wonders if it might be a metaphor for something else. The room, however, seems to represent the feelings and truths Hazel and the other characters are avoiding. By never entering particular metaphoric spaces in their own minds, they think they can protect themselves from their loss and pain.
