Shirley lived a sheltered and luxurious life as a child, but when she was seven a horrible event changed her life forever. After a Black man from Greenwood was accused of attacking a white woman, a group of Black men assembled around the accused man to prevent a lynching. In retaliation for this, a group of white men attacked the town with guns and killed many Black people. Shirley’s father, who had worked hard to become a lawyer even though his own mother could hardly read, tried to protect his family, but he was shot in his own doorway.
