Haiti is the country that is founded, in 1804, by freed slaves at the end of the events in The Black Jacobins. The word Haiti is said to come from an indigenous word meaning “mountainous land.” In The Black Jacobin, the word “Haiti” only makes appearances at the end of the chapters—after the declaration of independence from France issued by the blacks in San Domingo.
