When a scout is sent to find a place to house the soldiers and to tend to the dying and injured, he is sent to the McGavock farm, which is just across the river. The scout requests permission to use the house, and John McGavock does not hesitate in agreeing to the request. The McGavock family feels it is their duty to help the war effort.
