Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories usually use a completely unreliable narrator to tell the story. “The Black Cat” is no exception. This in itself fuels much of the suspense. What can we believe this narrator tells us? Is he even sane? The rest of the story relies on a cat that keeps showing up despite some gruesome abuse by the narrator. It is suspenseful to see the recurring cat motif combined with this narrator’s complete descent into madness.
