Chester Bowles was from Connecticut and functioned as the chief foreign policy advisor to Kennedy during the campaign. He was born in 1901 and attended the Yale engineering school. Bowles worked at his family's newspaper and later served as a foreign service officer in China. During the Depression, he formed the advertising firm of Benton & Bowles and prospered, becoming a millionaire by the time he was thirty. Bowles served as director of the Office of Price Administration during the Second World War. He was also elected as governor of Connecticut and served as ambassador to India during the 1950s.
