What was Alice doing in Ch.7?

Mrs. Wendleken commented that Mary had a black eye and that was different. Imogene's eye was only swollen because she walked into the choir-robe cabinet. The narrator believed Imogene suddenly caught on to the wonder of Christmas and the idea of God and that was why she was crying and walking into furniture.
